Power shift: 17 companies enter Cyprus’ new electricity market

From green startups to industry giants, competition kicks off with first bids today.

Newsroom

For the first time in Cyprus, households and businesses will soon be able to choose who supplies their electricity. Starting today, 17 companies, ranging from homegrown startups to established energy providers, are stepping into the island’s brand-new competitive electricity market.

Although the first commercial transactions will officially take place tomorrow, today’s bidding rounds are considered crucial in shaping how much energy will be sold and at what wholesale price.

Among the newcomers are companies focused on renewable energy, like Ioannou Alternative Energy Ltd, A. Kerasi Photovoltaics Ltd, and W2E1 Ltd, which specializes in waste-to-energy. Others, such as Petrolina Electric Ltd and Vassiliko Cement’s Clean Energy Supply, represent established Cypriot industrial players branching into electricity.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will still remain in the market both as a producer and supplier, but the big shift is the arrival of private competition. Firms like Bioland Aggregator “Aphrodite” Ltd and GG Green Energy Aggregator Ltd will serve as aggregators, pooling renewable producers under one umbrella.

Other notable entrants include:

  • ABIO Power Ltd – supplier and renewable energy representative
  • E. Fos Ltd – supplier and renewable aggregator
  • E&B (Energy & Beyond) Ltd – new independent supplier
  • EKO Energy Cyprus Ltd – supplier and aggregator
  • F.E First Electric Supply Ltd – independent supplier
  • Synenergia Ltd – supplier and aggregator

In total, 17 participants have signed contracts with the Transmission System Operator, signaling a long-awaited liberalization of Cyprus’ electricity sector.

Officials say competition is expected to drive down prices in the long run while boosting investment in renewable energy. Consumers, however, may need some patience before seeing lower bills, as wholesale pricing and supplier strategies take shape in the months ahead.
