A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Ecuador, causing damage to buildings near the epicenter but resulting in no reported injuries.

The quake struck in the Pacific Ocean, about 20.9 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of the city of Esmeraldas, at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Ecuador’s national risk management office said the tremor was felt in at least 10 provinces and that authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

Local media showed video footage from Esmeraldas, where the facades of several houses were damaged. The city is located more than 296 kilometers (184 miles) northwest of the capital, Quito.
