Hospitality venues, hotels, bars and restaurants, face continuous risks of on-site human trafficking, including exploitation for the purposes of labour, sex and criminal activities. The EU funded project HOST – Tackling Human Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector is being implemented in five countries: Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.
In Cyprus, leading anti-trafficking NGO, STEP UP STOP SLAVERY will deliver a series of free training sessions specifically for the hospitality sector. to provide practical insight from professional experts including Survivor Leaders, on preventing and responding to human trafficking risks:
- Limassol, 12th May, St. Raphael Resort & Marina (9.00-14.00)
- Larnaca, 14th May, Radisson Blu Hotel (9.00-14.00)
- Nicosia, 15th May, Hilton Hotel (9.00-14.00)
These free trainings are open to hotel and restaurant general managers, operations managers, HR managers, department heads, supervisors, and hospitality business owners and senior staff.
• Understand how trafficking risks can arise in hospitality venues
• Recognise warning signs and indicators of trafficking involving guests and workers
• Ensure the maintained safety of guests and staff
• Apply safe internal reporting procedures
• Strengthen corporate governance and compliance practices
• Reduce legal and reputational risk
Katerina Stephanou, Founder and CEO of STEP UP STOP SLAVERY, says, “These training sessions support hospitality businesses to strengthen their internal procedures to identify and respond safely to situations of exploitation affecting guests, workers and contractors. The focus is on operational decision-making and the duty of care, providing practical guidance that can be easily integrated into workplace procedures.”
The events are hosted with the support of the anti-trafficking coordinator -the Ministry of Justice and the Cyprus Anti Trafficking Police Unit who will provide an opening speech in Nicosia; and the Mayor of Limassol who will open the event in Limassol. Additional Partners are the Cyprus Hotel Association who have invited their members to attend.
