Qatar to help train staff for Cyprus’ planned security command centre

Cypriot personnel set to receive training in Qatar ahead of planned command centre launch.

Cyprus and Qatar have agreed to strengthen cooperation on security operations, maritime surveillance and staff training following a series of meetings between Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fitiris and Qatari officials.

During visits on Tuesday, October 20, Mr Fitiris toured Qatar’s National Command Centre (NCC) and the General Directorate of Coastal and Border Security, where he was briefed on the country’s security systems, operational procedures and emergency response arrangements.

The National Command Centre uses advanced technology and specialist expertise to coordinate security agencies and manage incidents, including emergencies. Discussions also covered the preparation of personnel and the importance of ensuring staff are ready to respond effectively when required.

Qatar offers training for Cyprus’ planned security centre

A key outcome of the meetings was Qatar’s offer to host and train Cypriot security personnel who are expected to work at a planned Command, Control and Communications Centre (C3) in Cyprus.

The proposed facility is intended to support coordination between the relevant services. Training in Qatar would give Cypriot personnel the opportunity to gain practical experience in the operation of command systems and the management of security incidents.

Cooperation was also discussed with Qatar’s General Directorate of Coastal and Border Security, focusing on the exchange of expertise, staff training and methods used to monitor and protect maritime borders.

Mr Fitiris received a briefing on the directorate’s operational structure, technological equipment and procedures for safeguarding the country’s coastal and maritime boundaries.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, Qatari officials welcomed the visits and showed a strong interest in sharing technical knowledge with their Cypriot counterparts.

Separate talks examine transparency and accountability

The minister’s programme also included a courtesy meeting with the president of Qatar’s Administrative Control and Transparency Authority.

The discussions covered transparency in public administration, accountability and good governance. Both sides also examined the role of effective oversight mechanisms in maintaining public confidence in state institutions.

The meetings form part of efforts to develop practical links between Cyprus and Qatar, particularly in security coordination, maritime border protection and the professional training of personnel.
