Olga Casado, 23, a rising female bullfighter in Spain’s traditional sport, earned a judge’s prize Sunday at a fair honoring Santo Cristo de Los Remedios. In rainy conditions, Casado maneuvered her cape skillfully before delivering the final blow, receiving the bull’s ear, an award for high-quality performance.
Since her 2022 debut, after training at Madrid’s José Cubero “Yiyo” Bullfighting School, Casado has become one of the most talked-about young figures in the arena. She has said she hopes to become the best female bullfighter in history and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Bullfighting remains a controversial sport with inherent dangers. In Lisbon, 22-year-old Portuguese bullfighter Manuel Maria Trindade died during a performance over the weekend. The tragedy prompted an outpouring of grief and criticism online, as well as renewed debate in Portugal over the ethics and risks of bullfighting.
Trindade’s mother condemned internet users celebrating her son’s death and described him as an animal lover who belonged to a respected group of “forcados,” who handle bulls without harming them.
