Weather forecast: Clear skies, clouds on cameo duty

Inland roasts, coasts juggle breezes, and the mountains flirt with showers - business as usual.

Newsroom

A seasonal low-pressure system is still hanging around, acting like it owns the place.

Today: Any stubborn low cloud or patchy fog hanging around early will clear out, leaving behind mostly clear skies. By afternoon, clouds will gather over the mountains for their daily appearance, and while most will behave, a few might toy with the idea of dropping some rain. Winds will start light and indecisive (3 Beaufort), then gradually shift southwest to northwest, building to light-to-moderate strength (3-4 Beaufort). Along the southeastern coasts, though, expect an afternoon upgrade to strong gusts (5 Beaufort). Seas will be slightly rough in the west and north, calmer elsewhere. Temperatures: 37°C inland (hot enough to regret black clothing), 32°C on the southeast and east coasts, 33°C in the north, 30°C elsewhere, and about 31°C up in the higher mountains.

Tonight: Mostly clear skies, but low cloud will drift in here and there, mostly to remind you the weather isn’t totally predictable. Later on, patches of mist or fog may creep into the east and southeast. Winds ease to a gentle 3 Beaufort, variable at times, from the southwest to northwest. The sea calms to slightly rough, though it keeps its restless edge in the west. Temperatures will cool to 22°C inland and on the coasts, and 20°C in the mountains, a slight break from the heat.

Thursday, Friday & Saturday: Mostly clear stays the default, but don’t be surprised if afternoon clouds over the mountains drop an isolated shower or two; quick, but enough to remind you that umbrellas aren’t entirely useless.

Temperatures: Through Friday, no major shifts, still sitting a bit above average. By Saturday, though, a minor dip will bring them back in line with seasonal norms. Translation: hot, then still hot, then slightly less hot.
