Say cheese, not conflict: Ministry pushes for Halloumi consensus

Ministry of Agriculture calls for dialogue to resolve Halloumi dispute

Newsroom

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment has emphasized that issues surrounding PDO Halloumi can be resolved through dialogue and transparency, following ongoing protests by goat and sheep farmers. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Halloumi’s PDO status while ensuring the sustainability of all stakeholders.

A key concern is the decline in goat and sheep milk production, which the Ministry attributes to farmers slaughtering livestock due to high meat prices. To address this, the Ministry is rolling out subsidies, investment incentives, and plans for large-scale farming units to boost production.

Additional measures include tracking milk supply data starting in October 2024, regulating milk powder use in Halloumi, and tightening PDO compliance inspections. The Ministry also assured farmers that all goat and sheep milk would be absorbed by cheese producers, ensuring stable demand.

Reiterating its call for cooperation, the Ministry stressed that long-term solutions require time and collaboration.
