Monday, February 16th: Say cheese! 'Tyrini’ begins under hazy skies

Sahara dust is checking in until Wednesday, accompanied by a spike in temperatures.

Newsroom

Good morning! The island has officially shifted gears into Cheese Week (Tyrini). The focus has moved from the butcher shop to the dairy farm as we embrace the final countdown to Lent. It’s a week defined by the bubbling of milk and the heavy lifting of pourekkia, essentially the island's grand tribute to halloumi before the "rabbit food" phase of Green Monday takes over.

Today’s forecast:
A weak high-pressure system is currently holding the line, but it’s bringing a hazy companion: dust. Expect to see suspended particles in the atmosphere from today through Wednesday. It’s that classic "filtered" look that usually signals a change in the weather.

The sky will be busy with increased mid- and high-level clouds drifting through at intervals. Winds are blowing from the northeast to southeast, generally light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort), but don’t be surprised by some strong 5 Beaufort gusts this morning.

It’s actually a fantastic day for an outdoor lunch (provided you don't mind the dust), with temperatures climbing to a very comfortable 22°C inland and on the coasts. Up in the higher mountains, it’s a crisp and pleasant 16°C.

Tonight, the high-altitude clouds stick around, but the winds will drop to a variable 3 Beaufort. The sea will be on its best behavior, calm to slightly rough, as we settle into the first dairy-heavy night of the week.

 The outlook

The weather is planning a mid-week reset to clear out the dust.

Tuesday (tomorrow): Clouds get a bit more localized. Expect rain to start popping up in the mountains and the southwest of the island.

Wednesday: This is the week's main event. Rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to sweep through, which should help wash the dust out of the air. If you are on the highest peaks of Troodos, you might even see some snowfall.

Thursday: Things quiet down. We might see some isolated rain in the mountains around midday, but the heavy lifting will be over.

Temperatures are on a gradual downward staircase. Enjoy the 22°C while it lasts, as we’ll slowly descend back toward the average climatic levels for February.
