Friday the 13th: The post-meat coma purge

As the BBQ haze lifts, a low-pressure system moves in to wash away the Tsiknopempti residue.

Newsroom

If you woke up feeling like your blood is 30% tzatziki and your brain is currently in a meat-induced fog, you aren't alone. The great Tsiknopempti Meat Coma has officially set in. Yesterday, the "smoke got in our eyes" (and our hair, and our clothes), but today, the atmosphere is looking to do some deep cleaning.

However, because it’s Friday the 13th, the weather isn't going to make it easy. Instead of a gentle rinse, we're getting a full-blown atmospheric reckoning to help clear the remaining smoke from our eyes.

Today’s forecast has a low-pressure system clocked in, and it’s brought some desert dust along for the ride. Expect cloudy skies with rain and local thunderstorms. Given the date, it feels appropriate that we might see some hail and even snow or sleet on the highest peaks of Troodos.

The wind is the real "slasher" today, blowing southwesterly at 4 to 5 Beaufort, it will frequently ramp up to a very strong 6 Beaufort. The sea is following suit, turning rough to very rough. If you're on the coast, watch out for the spray; it'll be mixed with that lingering dust until this evening.

Temperatures are staying deceptively mild, reaching 19°C inland and 20°C on the coast, while the mountains drop to a crisp 6°C.

Tonight the "spooky" vibes continue with more clouds, local rain, and thunderstorms. The wind will stay gusty and the sea stay's angry. It's the perfect night to stay inside, hide from any black cats, and digest the remaining souvla.

The weekend outlook

Saturday (tomorrow): The improvement phase begins. We’ll see partly cloudy skies and maybe some isolated showers or a stray thunderstorm, but the drama will gradually fade as the day progresses.

Meatfare Sunday: The sky clears just in time for the grand finale. It’s looking mainly clear, providing a perfect window for one last, epic Sunday barbecue before the 'farewell to meat' officially kicks off for the next eight weeks.

Monday: Crystal clear and even warmer, as temperatures climb well above the seasonal average. Don't forget to get your fill of pizza, cheesy pasta, and good old-fashioned cheese sandwiches this week, because Lent starts next Monday.
