Wednesday, February 11th: The mid-week weather lottery

The air is clear for now, but the atmosphere starts its ''sandy'' makeover tomorrow night.

Newsroom

Good morning, Cyprus. If you’re looking for a definitive answer on whether to carry an umbrella or wear flip-flops today, you’re asking the wrong person, and the Meteorological Department is currently in a "it’s complicated" relationship status with the sky.

We are currently under the influence of a weak low-pressure system, which in meteorology-speak means the weather has massive commitment issues. It’s not a storm, it’s not a heatwave; it’s just... unsettled.

Today is basically a game of weather roulette. We’re looking at partly cloudy skies with isolated showers popping up at random intervals. You might get a five-minute downpour while your friend two villages over is soaking up the sun. Speaking of sun, if you’re on the southern or eastern coasts, you’re winning the lottery with a balmy 21°C. The rest of us will have to settle for a perfectly respectable 19°C, while the mountain peaks are shivering at 8°C.

The wind is also feeling a bit dramatic. It’s blowing from the southwest/west at a moderate-to-strong 4 to 5 Beaufort in some areas. If you're by the sea, expect things to get rough. It’s definitely more of a "stroll on the promenade" day than a "set sail" day.

Tonight, the sky keeps its secrets. It’ll stay partly cloudy with more of those "maybe yes, maybe no" isolated showers. The wind will calm down a notch, but the sea remains a bit moody.

The outlook (the "here we go again" phase)

Thursday: Things get serious. The clouds move in for real, starting with showers in the west before spreading out. Oh, and the dust arrives. It’s making its grand entrance tomorrow night, just in time to give the air that classic "filtered" look.

Friday: This is the peak of the system. Expect cloudy skies, local rain, and thunderstorms. Since the dust will be hanging around, the rain might be a bit... textured. (We promised not to mention the "M" word, so let's call it "earth-toned precipitation.")

Saturday: The weather finally gets its act together. It starts cloudy with some lingering rain, but we’ll see a gradual improvement as the day goes on.

Despite the rain and the grit, temperatures are staying above average. So even if it's wet, at least it's not "teeth-chattering" wet.
