Newsroom
The quiet start to the week is officially over. A weak low-pressure system has settled in, bringing a shift in the weather pattern that will see us through to the weekend.
Today starts with clouds drifting in and out, but the real action kicks off after midday. If you are in the western half of the island, keep the umbrella close: local rain and isolated thunderstorms are on the menu. Up on the highest peaks of Troodos, temperatures are low enough that we can't rule out a touch of snow or sleet.
The wind will blow from the southwest to west. It starts gentle enough, but by the afternoon, it will pick up to a moderate-to-strong 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough, matching the moody sky.
Despite the gloom, temperatures are still holding up. We are looking at a mild 19°C inland and on the coasts, while the mountains are a crisp 11°C.
Tonight, the unsettled weather continues. Expect partly cloudy skies with isolated showers, and again, the west is the most likely spot for a thunderstorm. Coastal winds will stay active, gusting up to 5 Beaufort locally.
The outlook
Wednesday & Thursday: The pattern of "intervals" continues. We’ll see isolated showers and thunderstorms popping up here and there.
Thursday night (the twist): Just when you thought it was just rain, dust is expected to return to the atmosphere.
Friday: This looks like the wettest day of the bunch. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected. Combined with the dust arriving Thursday night, we are likely looking at muddy rain for Friday.
Temperatures are on a slow slide downward, gradually cooling to seasonal averages.
So, if you're in the west, batten down the hatches for the afternoon. For everyone else, get ready for a soggy (and potentially dusty) end to the week.
