Only native, drought-resistant species were planted to reduce irrigation needs and ensure long-term survival.

A tree-planting initiative took place on Sunday morning in the Alassa area, near the community’s archaeological site and the Church of Agios Georgios by the Kouris Dam, as part of efforts to repair environmental damage caused by last July’s wildfire.

The activity was organized jointly by the Alassa Community Council and AKEL, with support from the Department of Forests. The department contributed by supplying the plants free of charge and assisting in the overall effort.

Organizers emphasized that only native plant species were used, specifically drought-resistant varieties suited to Cyprus’s climate and soil. The goal was to ensure the new vegetation can survive with limited irrigation while adapting naturally to local conditions.

The Department of Forests also distributed additional saplings to participants, reiterating its commitment to supporting projects aimed at strengthening Cyprus’s environmental protection and expanding green coverage.
