Sexual harassment allegations rock Cyprus sports

Football and basketball coach under investigation

Newsroom

The Police are currently investigating an alleged sexual harassment case involving a female soccer player after an official complaint was filed. According to Police Spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou, the authorities are looking into the allegations but have declined to provide further details to protect the identity of the victim. These kinds of cases are treated with extreme sensitivity, especially given the vulnerable nature of the individuals involved.

The complaint was brought to light after the female footballer reached out to the Cyprus Footballers' Association (PASP) for help. The association, following its established protocol, has taken the case seriously, with PASP President Spyros Neophytides confirming that they are fully committed to ensuring justice is served.

In response to the complaint, PASP sought cooperation from both the Cyprus Football Federation (KOP) and the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA). KOP condemned any form of abuse or harassment in sports, assuring the association of its full support for the victim. Meanwhile, the KOA has pledged to provide the necessary guidance, psychological support, and monitor the process as it moves forward.

Meanwhile, a separate case of alleged sexual harassment and verbal abuse is unfolding in the world of basketball. The coach of both a girls’ and boys’ basketball team is under investigation for accusations of harassing players through text messages and inappropriate physical contact. Sources indicate that the coach, who has been placed under house arrest until the trial, faces serious allegations, including unwanted touching.

As the investigations continue in both cases, the sports community is under heightened scrutiny. Both incidents highlight the importance of addressing harassment in sports and ensuring that all athletes—whether in football, basketball, or any other sport—can participate in a safe and respectful environment. Both the police and sports organizations are working to ensure these cases are handled with the utmost care and seriousness.
