Smoking in a vehicle carrying anyone under the age of 18 can result in a €300 fine in Cyprus, whether the person smoking is the driver or a passenger.
Under Cyprus’ smoking legislation, Traffic Police officers can stop a vehicle if they see someone smoking while minors are travelling inside. The offence applies to public-service vehicles as well as private vehicles.
The information is included on the Road Safety Cyprus website, which provides motorists with details of driving offences and the penalties attached to them.
Hands on the wheel
The site also warns drivers that the rules on driving without both hands free are not limited to mobile phone use.
Holding items such as a soft drink, frappé, bottle of water or ice cream while driving can also result in a fine. Drivers caught doing so face an €85 penalty.
Mobile phone use carries separate penalties. A first offence results in a €150 fine and two penalty points. If the same offence is committed again within three months, the penalty increases to €300 and four penalty points.
The guidance is intended to remind motorists that everyday habits behind the wheel can also count as traffic offences, with penalties applying when police officers catch drivers in breach of the rules.
