Snow in May? Troodos wakes up to rare spring snowfall

Unexpected snow on Cyprus’ highest peaks gives the island one last taste of winter as chilly weather sweeps across the country.

Just when many in Cyprus had packed away winter for good and started planning beach trips and barbecues, Troodos woke up looking more like January than May.

Fresh snow fell over the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains over the past two days, surprising residents and visitors alike with a rare springtime dusting that transformed parts of Chionistra into a postcard-like winter scene.

The unusual snowfall came as a cold weather system swept across the island, bringing strong winds, rain, and a sharp drop in temperatures. While much of Cyprus dealt with gloomy skies and scattered storms, the mountains received an unexpected final taste of winter.

Photos shared online showed snow covering rooftops, trees, and roadside areas in Troodos, a sight not many expect to see at the start of May in a country already edging toward summer.

According to the weather service, snowfall was recorded on the highest peaks, with temperatures in the mountains dropping to around 3 degrees Celsius overnight. Frost was also expected to form in some areas, while the depth of snow in Chionistra reached 14 centimeters.

The chilly conditions are expected to gradually ease over the coming days, with temperatures set to climb again by Thursday and return closer to seasonal averages.

Still, for many Cypriots, the surprise snowfall offered one last reminder that the island’s weather can still keep people guessing, even in May.
