European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides has received the highest recognition from the European Federation of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) for her contributions to cancer prevention and treatment. The honorary award was presented on October 31, 2024, during the ECL’s 44th Annual Conference in Rome, where representatives from cancer organizations across Europe gathered to celebrate her work.

The ECL, a non-profit organization that unites cancer leagues from across Europe, grants this prestigious award to individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to cancer control. ECL representatives praised Kyriakides for her "crucial work in improving cancer prevention and treatment," which they said has inspired others to strengthen their efforts against cancer in Europe.

In a heartfelt address to the conference, Kyriakides shared how her personal experience with cancer has influenced her mission. “This mission could not be closer to my heart,” she said, emphasizing her drive to be "the voice of patients." She highlighted her work on the European Cancer Plan, a cornerstone of the European Health Union that seeks to provide equal access to cancer screening, treatment, and quality-of-life programs for all EU citizens.

Reflecting on the progress made, Kyriakides acknowledged the achievements of recent years while calling for continued commitment to prioritize cancer care across Europe. “We still have a long way to go," she stated, "but together, we must keep the fight against cancer at the top of the European political agenda for every patient, every family, every caregiver.”
