EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides has called on EU health ministers to coordinate and collaborate on donating vaccines and treatments for mpox (monkeypox). In a letter, Kyriakides highlighted the need for solidarity in addressing global health threats and stressed that the impact of European donations could be maximized through coordinated efforts.
“Solidarity is key to tackling global health threats. We rely on member states to support our African partners in managing the crisis,” Kyriakides stated in a post on social media platform X.
Kyriakides noted that several member states and third countries have pledged to donate doses to affected regions and Africa. She emphasized that European donations would be more effective if aligned with the proven Team Europe approach, similar to the successful strategy used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To facilitate this, Kyriakides’ team has reached out to representatives of the HERA council to inquire about the intention and availability of member states to donate vaccines and therapeutics for mpox before the end of August. She also pointed out that there is a framework contract with Bavarian Nordic, allowing for the procurement of additional mpox vaccines for donation purposes.
