Police seized 18 personal mobility devices and issued as many fines Friday morning in a citywide campaign targeting illegal use of e-scooters and similar vehicles.
Members of the force’s “Z” unit patrolled Nicosia’s main streets in a coordinated operation aimed at enforcing the Law on Personal Mobility Devices, legislation introduced to regulate the booming use of e-scooters, electric skateboards, and similar rides.
Officers said the checks are part of an ongoing push to reduce fatal and serious road accidents, citing growing concerns over reckless riding, unlicensed use, and devices operating without proper safety equipment.
While police did not detail each offense, violations under the law can include riding on prohibited roads, exceeding speed limits, carrying passengers, or failing to wear helmets. The seized devices will undergo further inspection to determine whether they meet legal safety and registration requirements.
Authorities have stepped up such campaigns in recent months amid an increase in road accidents involving personal mobility devices. Police say they will continue surprise checks in high-traffic areas to keep riders and other road users safe.
