Police in the Famagusta district are investigating an attempted murder after a 61-year-old man was critically injured Friday afternoon in a village in the district’s free area.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Aug. 8, when the man was found injured and was taken by ambulance to Famagusta General Hospital. Doctors determined he had sustained a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage.
He was intubated and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition remains critical, according to attending doctors.
Police said their investigation indicates the victim had a verbal altercation with another man, who then allegedly entered a car and, after starting it, struck the 61-year-old, causing him to fall and hit his head.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a Greek Cypriot suspect in connection with the case. Officers are working to locate him, Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department officials said.
Police Communications Branch officer Michalis Michael confirmed the sequence of events in a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, adding that the case remains under active investigation.
