The Meteorological Department issued two consecutive heat warnings on Saturday afternoon, emphasizing unusually high temperatures expected overnight and throughout Sunday.
A yellow alert will be in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, August 9, until 9 a.m. Sunday, August 10. During this period, minimum temperatures are forecast to remain elevated, reaching approximately 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit) in inland and coastal areas. Mountainous regions are expected to experience slightly cooler lows, around 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit).
For Sunday, the department upgraded the alert to orange, effective from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The maximum temperature is forecast to climb to near 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) in the inland areas. Mountainous zones will see lower highs, around 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit).
These warnings indicate a period of sustained extreme heat, which can pose health risks, especially when nighttime temperatures remain high and offer little relief. Authorities typically advise the public to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children.
