Successful PhD Symposium Showcases Groundbreaking Research at the UNIC’s Media and Communications PhD Programme

The annual PhD Symposium hosted by the University of Nicosia Department of Communications on Thursday, December 7th, proved to be a resounding success, drawing a diverse audience of academics, alumni, current students, and professionals.

Held at The University of Nicosia’s UNESCO amphitheatre, the event celebrated the innovative research of PhD candidates while fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration. The symposium featured compelling presentations from PhD candidates across various sections of the field of media and communication, highlighting cutting-edge studies on topics such as disinformation and audience perceptions of the Russo-Ukrainian war on Telegram, The body image of women on TikTok, the media influence of the immigration crises in Greece and Cyprus, the lived experiences of virtual reality footage, and audience reception of Cyprus-related historical dramas Bir Zamanlar Kıbrıs and Famagusta.

Professor Nicholas Nicoli, coordinator of the PhD programme praised the event, stating, “This symposium is a testament to the brilliance and dedication of our PhD community. Their research not only advances knowledge but also addresses critical issues facing our society.”

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many commending the high-quality research presentations and the opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange. Maria Larkin, PhD candidate, reflected on the experience: “Presenting my work at the symposium was an incredible opportunity. The feedback I received from both peers and seasoned professionals was invaluable.”

According to Professor Nicoli, the University of Nicosia Media and Communications PhD programme remains committed to providing platforms like this symposium to empower its students, facilitate collaboration, and contribute to the global academic community. “Plans are already underway for next year’s event, which promises to build on this year’s success”, he added.
