Limassol police arrested a male suspect on Tuesday who was wanted for attempted murder, in connection with an apparent dispute that ended up with a Sri Lankan woman in hospital with severe stab wounds.

According to local media, 46-year-old Sunil Sepala Yatibahu Mudalige from Sri Lanka was detained at Larnaca International Airport early Tuesday morning, suspected of stabbing a 50-year-old woman, also from Sri Lanka.

It was reported that the suspect had flown to Cyprus from a European city in order to discuss a divorce settlement with his wife

Local media said the suspect, who has been separated from his wife, went Monday morning to meet with her at her workplace in Zakaki in order to discuss divorce papers. During the encounter, there was an argument and the man reportedly pulled a knife and injured the woman multiple times. The incident was said to have taken place in front of an eye witness who called the police, described as a doctor who is also the employer of the victim.

The Sri Lankan woman was rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital, where doctors said she sustained knife wounds in the abdomen and face. She was then admitted for surgery where doctors said she was in critical condition.

Some reports said the suspect was driven to the scene by two individuals, a Greek Cypriot elderly man who was later arrested and another female from Sri Lanka who was questioned by police.

It was reported that the suspect had flown to Cyprus from a European city in order to discuss a divorce settlement with his wife.
