Cyprus is turning to technology to strengthen its fight against wildfires, with TechIsland leading a €2 million initiative that will equip communities with faster response tools, smarter fire detection systems, and real-time alerts to help prevent small fires from turning into major disasters.
Launched in the wake of the devastating 2025 wildfires, the TechIsland Wildfire Initiative has grown from an emergency fundraising campaign into a long-term program focused on prevention, preparedness, and recovery.
TechIsland Chairman Valentinos Polykarpou said the initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when the private sector, government, local communities, and volunteers work together.
More than 60 technology companies and individual donors came together to raise around €2 million, funding projects designed to make Cyprus better prepared for future wildfire seasons.
For the average Cypriot, the benefits could be significant: quicker detection of fires, faster response times in rural communities, and better information reaching both residents and emergency services when every minute counts.
Bringing firefighting closer to communities
One of the initiative's biggest investments is a €450,000 contribution towards purchasing small firefighting vehicles for 45 community councils across Cyprus.
Working with the Ministry of Interior and the Union of Cyprus Communities, TechIsland is covering 20% of the cost through a government subsidy program.
The idea is straightforward. Instead of waiting for crews to arrive from farther away, local communities will have equipment on hand to tackle fires during the critical first minutes, when they are still easier to contain.

A free app that helps spot fires sooner
Technology is also being placed directly into the hands of the public through SafeIsland CY, a free app for iOS and Android.
The app allows users to report smoke or fire, upload photos from the scene, receive alerts about nearby incidents, and view an interactive map showing fire stations, water points, and other useful emergency locations.
It is designed to complement, not replace, emergency services by helping communities share information more quickly and improving situational awareness during an emergency.
Satellites and drones join the fight
The initiative is also funding the Geosfire Project, developed by researchers at the Cyprus Institute's Climate and Atmosphere Research Center.
Using satellite data and unmanned aerial vehicles, the project aims to detect fires within the first critical minutes after they ignite, giving authorities valuable time to respond before flames spread.
As Cyprus experiences hotter, drier summers and longer fire seasons, early detection technology could become one of the country's most effective wildfire prevention tools.
Helping communities recover
The program also extends beyond firefighting.
Through the Green Souni project, burned areas have been cleared and restored with the planting of 130 mature cypress trees and 200 shrubs, creating a green corridor that organizers hope can serve as a model for other fire-affected communities across the island.

TechIsland Chairman Valentinos Polykarpou said the initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when the private sector, government, local communities, and volunteers work together.
"What started as an immediate response at a critical moment has evolved into a long-term program with practical solutions and meaningful impact," he said.
For Cyprus, the initiative represents more than another technology project. It shows how innovation can be applied to solve one of the island's most pressing challenges.
With wildfires becoming more frequent and more destructive, investing in technology that helps detect fires earlier, equips local communities, and speeds up emergency response could make a real difference in protecting lives, homes, and the environment.
