A 16-year-old is fighting for his life in hospital after an early-morning collision in Aglantzia, while police have arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of driving the vehicle involved.

The crash happened at around 2 a.m. Friday, turning what might have been an ordinary late-night journey through the capital into a serious police investigation.

According to police, a vehicle travelling from Georgios Grivas Digeni Avenue toward Larnakos Avenue struck a personal mobility device being ridden by the teenager. The circumstances leading up to the collision are still being investigated.

The impact dragged the device along the road, leaving the 16-year-old seriously injured.

He was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police said he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The vehicle involved in the collision was found a short time later at a different location from the scene of the crash.

Police subsequently carried out an alcohol test on a 27-year-old man who, based on the information gathered so far, is believed to have been driving the vehicle.

His final reading was 73 micrograms, more than three times the legal limit of 22 micrograms. He was arrested on the spot.

The case once again puts the dangers facing young people using personal mobility devices on Cyprus roads under the spotlight, particularly at night when visibility is lower and the consequences of a driver's mistake can be devastating.

Nicosia Traffic Police are continuing their investigation to establish exactly how the collision happened.
