Tesla recalls cars in Cyprus over faulty Takata airbags

Tesla has issued a recall for 26 vehicles in Cyprus due to faulty Takata airbags, raising concerns for local owners of the electric car brand. The vehicles affected by the recall are from Tesla's Model S range, specifically from the 2012 to 2016 production years.

According to Kathimerini's Hector Georgiou, this recall was first announced by the company globally, but the situation is complicated for owners in Cyprus, as Tesla does not have an official dealership on the island.

According to the Ministry of Transport, affected Tesla owners should get in touch with the Road Transport Department for further guidance. Antonis Constantinou, an official at the Ministry, noted that, in general, the company itself should contact owners directly in the case of recalls, providing clear instructions for repairs. However, in Cyprus’ case, the absence of a Tesla dealership means owners may face challenges in handling the recall.

George Louka, director of the Road Transport Department, advised that owners of these affected Tesla vehicles should contact Tesla’s European dealerships, such as those in Greece, to arrange for the airbag replacement. Louka emphasized the importance of being cautious when sourcing vehicles, noting that certain procedures may be more difficult without a local dealer network.

Tesla itself has informed customers worldwide that the recall specifically concerns the front passenger airbags in Model S vehicles from the 2012 to 2016 range. This recall began in January 2017 for 2012 models, extended to 2013 models in 2018, and continued through 2019 for the 2014-2016 models. Tesla clarified that other models, such as the Model 3, Model X, or newer Model S vehicles, are not affected by the recall.

Cypriot drivers have been given eight months to replace the airbags, after which their vehicle’s certificate of suitability and registration will be automatically revoked if they do not comply. With no local Tesla dealership, owners must make arrangements to ensure their vehicles are fixed within the given time frame.

This recall is part of a wider global issue related to the Takata airbag crisis, which has affected millions of vehicles worldwide due to safety concerns. For Tesla owners in Cyprus, it means navigating an international process to ensure their vehicles meet safety standards.
