Thunderstorms to rumble across the island

Hail and heavy rain on the horizon

Newsroom

The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for isolated thunderstorms in Cyprus. According to the forecast, isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect the island intermittently, particularly in the mountainous regions, inland areas, and the east. Hail may also occur during these thunderstorms. Rainfall intensity is projected to range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour. The yellow warning will be in effect from 11 AM on Wednesday (11/10) until 6:00 PM on the same day.

Today, initially, localized increased cloudiness will be observed, which is expected to give way to isolated showers mainly in the northeast. Gradually, the weather will become partly cloudy, locally mostly cloudy, with expectations of localized showers and isolated thunderstorms, primarily in the eastern half and mountainous areas, and later mainly in the mountainous regions and south of Troodos. Hail is possible during the thunderstorms. Winds will blow, initially northeast to southeast, weak 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming variable, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. The temperature will rise to around 29 degrees in the inland and coastal areas and approximately 20 degrees in higher mountain areas.

Tonight, the weather will be mainly clear, although later, mainly on the eastern coasts, there will be sporadic increased cloudiness. Winds will gradually become mainly northwest to northeast, weak 2 to 3 Beaufort, and the sea will be calm to slightly rough. The temperature will drop to around 17 degrees in the inland, about 18 degrees on the coast, and around 11 degrees in higher mountain areas.

Thursday and Friday will start mainly clear, but during the midday and afternoon hours, cloudiness is expected to develop, leading to isolated rain on Thursday and isolated showers or even thunderstorms on Friday, primarily in the mountainous areas. On Saturday, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountainous regions and the northern half of the island.

The temperature is expected to experience a slight increase on Thursday, followed by a gradual decrease until Saturday, remaining close to the average climatological values.
