Today’s weather forecast: Hot, hotter, and a surprise shower?

Sizzling alert: Yellow warning issued as temperatures remain high

Newsroom

If you were dreaming of a breezy, cool Monday, consider this your wake-up call. The Meteorology Department has issued a yellow warning as the heat turns up in a big way. Inland temperatures are expected to hit a sweltering 40°C, while the mountains offer only slightly more forgiving conditions at around 32°C. The warning kicks in at noon and sticks around until 5:00 p.m., so plan accordingly, preferably with shade, sunscreen, and something icy in hand.

Thanks to a warm air mass and some seasonal low pressure, most of the island will see plenty of sunshine once the early morning fog and low clouds lift. But don’t let the clear skies fool you. By midday, clouds are expected to build over the mountains and possibly some interior regions, bringing a chance of isolated showers and even the odd thunderstorm making a cameo.

Winds will start off light to moderate from the southwest to northwest but should pick up some momentum by the afternoon, especially along the southwestern, southern, and eastern coastlines. The sea will be slightly rough overall, with calmer patches in the south and east during the early hours. As for temperatures, expect things to sizzle: around 40°C inland, 35°C along most coasts, a slightly cooler 33°C on the west coast, and about 32°C in the mountains.

Tonight: A mild retreat from the heat

As evening rolls in, expect clouds to creep back into the picture. By late night and early morning, there’s a good chance of local mist or light fog. Winds will mellow to a light breeze, mainly from the southwest to northwest, and the sea will stay slightly rough in the west and north, calming down a bit in the south and east. Overnight temperatures will dip to around 24°C inland and along the coast, with mountain areas cooling to a more comfortable 20°C.

Coming days: Turning up the heat even more

Tuesday brings more of the same; clear skies, high heat, and the possibility of an isolated mountain shower during the afternoon hours. Then on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather stays mostly clear and ramps up to very hot, as temperatures continue their climb well above seasonal norms. In other words, this week’s forecast calls for lots of sun, lots of heat, and very few excuses not to treat yourself to an extra scoop of ice cream.

So stay cool, stay hydrated, and maybe save the baking for the kitchen, unless, of course, you’re trying to fry an egg on the sidewalk.
