A 55-year-old Romanian worker was killed Friday afternoon in a workplace accident in a rural area of Kofinou while unloading heavy concrete counterweights from a truck, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Finis Alexandru, was employed by a private company involved in the assembly of pylons for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. during unloading operations using a crane mounted on a truck.
Police said that while concrete counterweights weighing between two and three tons each were being unloaded, the truck, which was also carrying electric poles, tipped to the right under circumstances that remain under investigation. Alexandru, who was standing on the truck bed at the time, fell to the ground and was struck by a concrete counterweight.
He was transported by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Officers from the police and officials from the Department of Labour Inspection conducted on-site examinations. As part of the investigation, the 51-year-old truck driver was arrested under a court warrant and taken into custody.
The investigation is being carried out by the Kofinou Regional Police Station in cooperation with labour authorities.
