Tuesday weather forecast: Don't bother holding onto your hats; it's officially a bad hair day

A cold air mass and gale-force winds make for a brisk Tuesday.

Newsroom

If you stepped outside this morning and immediately wanted to go back to bed, you are not alone. A low-pressure system combined with a relatively cold air mass is currently parking itself over the island, making sure we all remember what January is supposed to feel like.

Today is going to be a blustery one. The weather will be intermittently cloudy, playing hide-and-seek with the sun. We are expecting isolated showers or brief thunderstorms, starting in the west and north before shifting inland and to the mountains later in the day.

But the real story today is the wind. It will be blowing mainly from the northwest, and it means business. Expect moderate to strong gusts (4 to 5 Beaufort), reaching very strong (6 Beaufort) locally. If you live on the west or north coast, the sea is going to be very rough, so maybe skip the coastal walk today.

Temperature-wise, it’s officially "jacket and scarf" weather. Highs will struggle to reach 12°C inland and 15°C on the coast. Up in the highest mountains, it’s a freezing 2°C, but at least the scenery is looking the part. There is currently 14cm of snow at Chionistra square!

Tonight, the clouds will linger a bit longer in the north and mountains with some isolated rain, and the winds will start off strong (up to 6 Beaufort) before finally calming down later in the night.

Here is the silver lining: this cold snap is actually cleaning things up. Wednesday (tomorrow) and Thursday are forecasted to be mostly clear. It will still be crisp, but at least it will be sunny. By Friday, we’ll see some clouds return and temperatures finally starting to climb back up to normal levels.

So, bundle up, secure anything loose on your balcony, and enjoy the fresh air!
