A tragic incident has claimed the lives of two young children in the village of Xylofagou on Sunday afternoon.
The children, aged 8 and 10, were discovered unconscious inside a parked vehicle outside a home within the British Bases of Dhekelia. Emergency medical teams and police responded quickly, but both children were declared dead at the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined exactly what happened. Initial lines of inquiry are examining the possibility that the children died from asphyxiation, although authorities have not officially confirmed the cause.
Police from the British Bases have sealed off the area outside the residence while forensic officers gather evidence and interview witnesses. The investigation is focused on establishing how the children came to be inside the vehicle and the sequence of events leading to their deaths.
