Wait...it’s Friday? The weather's just as confused as we are

Thunderstorms, hail, and calendar chaos, Cyprus gets a reality check after the holiday hangover

Newsroom

Good Sunday, everyone...wait, no… Monday? Actually, it’s Friday. If you're still disoriented from Thursday’s midweek holiday and feeling like you’ve time-travelled into next week, rest assured: Cyprus is right there with you. And just to make things extra spicy, the skies have decided to go full drama mode, with thunderstorms, hail, and wild winds. Because why not?

The Meteorology Department has issued a yellow warning for isolated but severe thunderstorms from 11:00 to 18:00 today, meaning nature is also not sure what day it is and might be throwing a tantrum.

So, if your internal clock thinks it’s Monday, your brain says Sunday, and your weather app screams "storm incoming", just roll with it.

What’s coming your way:

Thunder & lightning (very, very frightening): Storms are expected to hit mostly the mountains, inland areas, and northern Cyprus, but don’t get too comfy if you live elsewhere.

Morning drizzle, afternoon sizzle: Expect some light showers on the west, south, and north coasts during the morning. But by afternoon, the weather’s turning up the volume; thunderstorms could roll in nearly everywhere.

Surprise hail alert: Yes, hail might show up just to ruin your blow-dry or picnic plans.

Wind: chaotic neutral: Mostly blowing from the southwest to northwest, between 3–5 Beaufort, so hold onto your umbrellas, hats, and anything not bolted down.

Temps: Not bad if you stay dry. About 23°C inland and on the coast, but a brisk 12°C in the mountains. Maybe bring a jacket and sunscreen, just to be safe.

Tonight’s forecast:

The sky will continue to hover in a moody, "will I or won’t I rain?" state. Expect clouds, scattered showers, and maybe a rumble or two, mostly near the coasts. Winds will calm down and the sea will behave, more or less. Temps drop to around 12°C inland, 14°C along the coast, and a nippy 5°C in the mountains.

Weekend twist:

Just when you thought it might be safe to make outdoor plans...nope. Saturday and Sunday come with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the mountains and central areas. There’s also a hail encore, because the sky clearly has a flair for the dramatic.

Good news? Temperatures will slowly start to climb by Monday, inching back to springtime norms. Bad news? Until then, the umbrella is your best friend.

So, if your internal clock thinks it’s Monday, your brain says Sunday, and your weather app screams "storm incoming", just roll with it. Embrace the confusion, wear layers, and maybe double-check the calendar before yelling, “have a great weekend!”
