A prominent low-pressure system named "Elias" is currently centered in the southern Ionian Sea, and its effects are being felt across the Hellenic region. Simultaneously, a weaker low-pressure area looms near Cyprus. The Meteorological Service's latest forecast paints a picture of isolated showers and brief thunderstorms on the horizon, predominantly in mountainous zones. Temperatures are anticipated to soar to around 36 degrees Celsius in inland areas.
Of particular interest is the upcoming weather pattern, which hints at a drop in temperatures and the promise of rain in various parts of the island.
Today: Following the dissipation of local low clouds or thin fog, the skies will gradually clear. However, as the day progresses, localized cloudiness will emerge, with the potential for isolated showers or brief thunderstorms. These weather events are expected mainly in the mountainous areas to the south of Troodos.
Winds will begin variably and gently, registering around 3 on the Beaufort scale. As the day unfolds, they will veer predominantly from the southwest to the northwest, maintaining a gentle to moderate strength, hovering at 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale. Come afternoon, expect pockets of strong winds, reaching 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale, especially along the southwestern coasts. Sea conditions will start calm but gradually turn slightly rough in the southwestern and some northern coastal areas.
Temperatures are poised to climb to approximately 36 degrees Celsius inland, around 32 degrees Celsius in the southeastern, eastern, and northern coastal regions, roughly 31 degrees Celsius in other coastal areas, and approximately 27 degrees Celsius in the elevated mountainous regions.
Tonight: Expect mainly clear skies during the night. Winds will predominantly blow from the west to northwest, occasionally shifting to the north-northeast, all while maintaining a gentle breeze at 3 on the Beaufort scale. The sea will transition from calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures are projected to dip to around 20 degrees Celsius inland, approximately 22 degrees Celsius along the western coasts, about 21 degrees Celsius along the remaining coasts, and roughly 17 degrees Celsius in the higher elevated mountain areas.
Thursday: The day will begin with clear skies, but cloudiness is expected to develop as the afternoon progresses. This will likely give rise to isolated showers or thunderstorms, primarily in mountainous regions and the eastern half of the island.
Friday and Saturday: These days may bring sporadic increases in cloudiness, potentially leading to isolated rainfall, especially in the east. During this period, the area will be under the influence of a strong western air current.
In terms of temperature, Thursday is forecasted to remain relatively stable, staying above average. However, on Friday, a noticeable temperature drop is on the horizon, particularly in inland and mountainous areas. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to remain fairly consistent, hovering around the climatological averages.
