Weather forecast: Clear skies, occasional clouds plotting mischief

Inland is sizzling, the mountains are cooler but not smug enough, and the sea can’t decide if it wants to nap or fidget.

Newsroom

A seasonal low-pressure system is stretching across the area, quietly running the show while pretending it’s not responsible for anything.

Today: Expect mostly clear skies, though some patches of cloud will make a halfhearted effort to be dramatic. Winds will start light from the southeast (3 Beaufort, just a polite breeze), before shifting to southwest-to-northwest and picking up to light or moderate strength (3-4 Beaufort). Along the southern and eastern coasts, they may briefly crank up to strong (4-5 Beaufort), the sort that leaves you chasing napkins. The sea will be slightly rough, which is marine shorthand for “you’ll notice, but you’ll cope.” Temperatures will climb to 37°C inland, 30°C on the west coast, 33°C on the other coasts, and 29°C up in the higher mountains, where it’s still hot, just with better scenery.

Tonight: The skies stay mostly clear, though low clouds will wander in here and there, and later at night (and early morning) patches of fog are likely to develop in spots. Winds will keep to their southwest-to-northwest rhythm, light at 3 Beaufort, with the sea holding steady at calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will dip to 21°C inland, 23°C along the coasts, and a cooler 20°C in the higher mountains.

Tuesday & Wednesday: Mostly clear, but midday and early afternoon clouds will gather over the mountains. These may even produce isolated showers and, possibly, an isolated thunderstorm if the weather decides to be theatrical.

Thursday: Back to mostly clear, with some extra cloud cover showing up here and there to keep things from being too predictable.

Temperatures: Rising slightly through Wednesday, then holding steady on Thursday, sticking near or just above the seasonal average.
