Weather forecast: Mostly clear skies, with a side of surprise showers

The inland is baking, the coasts are sweating, and the mountains are preparing a matinee performance of ''spotty rain.''

Newsroom

Seasonal low pressure is running the show, making sure the weather has just enough drama to stay interesting.

Today: For most of the island, expect clear skies with some intervals of extra cloud cover. By midday, the mountains, and possibly some inland spots, may cook up isolated showers, with the chance of a brief thunderstorm cameo. Winds will start in the morning from the southeast to southwest, occasionally variable, light at 3 Beaufort. By midday, they’ll swing to southwest-to-northwest, light to moderate (3-4 Beaufort), and along the coasts, they may briefly amp up to 4-5 Beaufort, just enough to scatter beach towels. The sea will generally be slightly rough, which is nautical shorthand for “fine, but don’t take the fancy boat shoes.”

Temperatures: a roasting 38°C inland, 34°C on the southern, eastern, and northern coasts, 32°C on the west and southwest coasts, and a cooler 28°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with some patches of low cloud turning up here and there. Later at night into the early morning, expect pockets of mist or fog, especially in the south and east, perfect conditions for pretending you’re in a moody noir film. Winds will keep to southwest-to-northwest, light to locally moderate (3-4 Beaufort). Seas in the east and south will behave (calm to slightly rough), while in the west and north they’ll stay slightly rough. Temperatures will ease down to 23°C inland, 24°C along the coasts, and 19°C in the higher mountains.

Wednesday: A familiar pattern with mostly clear skies, but with clouds gathering over the mountains and maybe inland by midday. Those clouds may bring isolated showers and even a one-off thunderstorm if the atmosphere is feeling theatrical.

Thursday & Friday: Mostly clear again, with cloud cover occasionally popping up. In the mountains, there’s a slim chance of a midday shower,  short-lived and probably forgotten before the kettle boils.

Temperatures: No major changes through Friday. Expect them to hover close to or slightly above the seasonal average, which is the weather’s way of saying: “It’s summer, what did you expect?”
