The White House has asked US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign, press secretary Katie Zacharia said on Tuesday, without giving a reason for the decision.
Speaking at her first media briefing, Zacharia described Guilfoyle as “a wonderful asset to the team” and said the administration wished her well. She did not provide further details about the request or explain whether a departure date had been set.
The announcement comes after the Wall Street Journal reported a series of alleged improprieties by Guilfoyle before she secured the diplomatic post in Athens.
According to the newspaper's reporting, the allegations included threatening an official in the host country, accepting gifts and services deemed improper, and offering to use her influence within the US administration in exchange for payment of a $100,000 credit card bill.
Guilfoyle, a former television presenter and a one-time fiancée of Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of US President Donald Trump, had faced scrutiny over the reported conduct ahead of and following her appointment.
The White House has not provided further information about the circumstances behind its request for her resignation. The allegations reported by the Wall Street Journal have not been established as findings of wrongdoing in the information provided.
