A year into a sweeping infrastructure overhaul that has left several streets in Ypsonas closed to vehicles, the local municipality has decided to cancel this year’s household garbage collection fees and refund residents who already paid them.
The decision, announced this week by the Kourion Municipal Council, applies to all properties within the affected construction zone, where access and services have been disrupted since the start of 2024. Annual refuse charges for households, normally around €190, will be reimbursed in full.
Officials said the move acknowledges the difficulties residents have faced as the area undergoes a complete redesign of its road network under Limassol’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Sidewalks have been removed, parking relocated to nearby lots, and trash bins temporarily placed on adjacent streets to allow municipal crews to continue collections.
The ongoing works, located primarily along Michail Karaoli, Argonafton, and Xenofontos streets, form the first phase of a €3.1 million project led by ARACO Construction Cy Ltd. The upgrades include underground installation of utilities, new drainage and irrigation systems, improved sidewalks, and the addition of a modern bicycle lane. Extensive tree planting is also planned to help combat urban heat and promote greener public spaces.
Mayor Pantelis Georgiou said the initiative aims to create a more sustainable, pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment for Ypsonas residents. The project is fully financed through Cyprus’s Social Cohesion Fund and the THALIA 2021–2027 program.
Construction is expected to continue through next year, with traffic restrictions remaining in place until the completion of the first phase.
