Cyprus restaurants cleaner and friendlier, but prices all over the map

Water costs up to €4.50, salads hit €15, and lamb tops at €30 as consumer watchdog calls for better training and transparency.

Cyprus restaurants may be cleaner and more polite these days, but diners are still facing wild price swings and patchy service, according to the annual assessment by the Cyprus Consumers Association.

The study, based on 200 “mystery shopper” visits to food and drink establishments across all districts between May and September, found big improvements in cleanliness and staff courtesy. But it also uncovered huge differences in food and drink prices, along with continuing issues in staff training and toilet hygiene.

Same meal, triple the price

The price of a basic meal can vary dramatically from one restaurant to another. A bottle of water costs anywhere from €1 to €4.50, while soft drinks range between €1.50 and €5. Beer can go up to €6.70. A simple salad for two to four people might set you back anywhere from €3.50 to €15, and chips from €3 to €8.

Main dishes also show major variations: chicken dishes range between €13 and €25, pork between €7.50 and €25.80, and lamb tops the list with prices from €14 to €30. Platters have risen too, now ranging from €29 to €42, while pizzas sell between €15 and €20.

The Association noted that, compared to 2024, prices have increased in several categories, and some eateries are trying to hide it by cutting portion sizes or using cheaper ingredients.

Quality and training concerns

Despite some improvement, the report found ongoing use of non-authentic or adulterated products like imitation halloumi or lower-grade olive oil in some establishments. Evaluators also said many issues stem from a lack of professional training and inconsistent management standards.

On the bright side, service speed and politeness have improved overall.

The Cyprus Consumers Association urged closer cooperation between the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, professional associations, and consumer groups to raise hygiene, transparency, and staff skills.

“Improving the image of our restaurants isn’t just about good food; it’s about upgrading the visitor experience and making Cyprus more competitive as a tourism destination,” the Association concluded.
