The mother of a 4-year-old boy who was declared brain dead after being treated for viral meningitis has vowed to fight for answers, as protesters gathered outside Limassol General Hospital demanding a full investigation.
During the protest, the mother appealed to the authorities to establish what happened and hold accountable anyone found responsible.
“On the 14th, they told me he would be blind. They even said it in front of the child,” she said. “In the end, they were wrong. My baby did not go blind. He was brain dead.”
She said she would pursue the case “to the end” in her search for justice.
The boy’s parents have publicly alleged that there were delays and mistakes in the way his condition was handled after he began showing symptoms of meningitis. No official investigation has yet determined whether medical errors occurred.
The State Health Services Organization, known by its Greek acronym OKYpY, said two separate investigations are now underway.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the case and have already taken statements from health professionals involved in the child’s treatment, the organization said. An internal OKYpY investigation is also continuing under its established procedures and regulations.
Responding to the protest, OKYpY said it understood the pain felt by the child’s family and relatives, as well as their need for answers.
However, it stressed that the investigations must be allowed to proceed without prejudice and called for respect for the presumption of innocence until all the facts have been established.
The organization said it is fully cooperating with the authorities and will provide any assistance needed for an independent investigation.
It also pledged that every complaint would be examined impartially and without interference, while protecting the rights of both patients and healthcare professionals.
