Father of boys found dead in Xylofagou car denied bail

The man will remain in custody as the criminal case moves toward a September plea hearing.

The father of two boys found dead inside a car in Xylofagou will remain in police custody after a senior magistrate decided that he should not be released on bail.

The children were found dead on June 28. Their father has since been charged with causing death through a reckless and thoughtless act, an offense carrying a maximum prison sentence of four years.

“The previous dates set in the case remain as they are. At this stage, there is no further information,” the British Bases said, confirming the latest decision.

The ruling follows a hearing on July 31, held by videoconference before a senior judge in Britain. Prosecutors and defense lawyers completed their arguments during that hearing, but the judge said he needed time to examine all the facts before issuing a written decision.

The defense had submitted two key requests: that the father be released on bail and that he be allowed to travel to Bulgaria to accompany his children’s bodies and attend their funeral.

The main criminal proceedings are continuing separately.

The case will return to court on Sept. 22, when the charges will be formally put to the defendant and he will be asked to enter a plea.

If he denies the charges, the case is expected to proceed to a full hearing on Nov. 30, unless either side asks for an earlier date.
