€500,000 protection demand ends in shooting at Limassol beach hotel

Greek man arrested, Russian suspect still at large in organized crime case.

Newsroom

A 39-year-old Greek man was arrested Monday after a Ukrainian businessman was shot outside a Limassol beach hotel in what police say was an attempted extortion over €500,000. Authorities are still searching for a 44-year-old Russian man, suspected gunman and alleged member of a Russian criminal gang.

Police say the Ukrainian victim and his business partner had received repeated threats demanding half a million euros for “protection.” The situation escalated to a tense meeting at the hotel, where the gunman allegedly confronted the pair in the presence of the now-arrested Greek suspect before opening fire.

The 42-year-old victim was seriously injured but has since undergone surgery and is in stable condition at Limassol General Hospital.

After the attack, the suspects fled in a vehicle later found abandoned along the Zygi coastal road. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues, citing links to organized crime and large-scale extortion.
