Business bankruptcies soar 83% in Greece as new startups also rise

2025 sees sharp jump in closures alongside growth in transport and manufacturing ventures.

Business bankruptcies increased by 83.2% in 2025, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said Thursday.

ELSTAT published data showing that bankruptcies across all sectors of the economy rose to 557 in 2025 compared with 304 in 2024.

New business registrations also increased in 2025. Business start-ups totaled 140,229, a rise of 5.8% compared to 2024.

The largest increases in new business registrations in 2025 compared to 2024 were recorded in transportation and storage, which rose 33.7%, and manufacturing, which increased 17.6%.

In contrast, registrations declined in accommodation and food services, down 7.1%, and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, which fell 4.0%.
