The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) has approved the Cyprus Transmission System Operator’s (TSOC) request to develop and operate large-scale energy storage systems integrated into the national electricity grid.
Under the decision, TSOC will install battery storage facilities at three substations: Athalassa (40MW/80MWh), Free Industrial Zone (40MW/160MWh), and Eastern (40MW/160MWh). These projects aim to enhance grid stability, protect consumers, and support renewable energy producers by reducing curtailment risks.
CERA granted TSOC the right to own and manage these storage systems without a competitive contracting process, under the condition that ownership remains with TSOC. The installations must be completed by June 2026 and will receive priority when providing grid services.
This move follows a special exemption under European Union Directive (EU) 2024/1711, recognized by Cyprus law, reflecting the urgent public need for reliable energy storage capacity. CERA emphasized that while TSOC’s projects proceed, ample opportunities remain for private storage investors.
The decision will be publicly available on CERA’s website and communicated to government officials.
