Farewell, Makareio: Nicosia’s historic stadium to transform into modern sports hub

KOA president says the iconic venue’s time is up — but something better is on the way

Newsroom

The historic Makareio Stadium in Nicosia is officially shutting its doors, but not without a plan. According to the president of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA), Yiannis Ioannou, the stadium will be transformed into a state-of-the-art sports complex designed for the future.

Speaking on SPOR FM 95.0, Ioannou explained that the decision wasn’t made lightly, but it was necessary.

“Makareio has run its course. It no longer meets modern standards,” he said. “We’ve decided to build a new, model athletic center that the country really needs.”

The revamped site will feature an indoor athletics arena, facilities for Paralympic athletes, and various sports zones that reflect today’s needs. But one thing’s for sure: it won’t be a football stadium anymore.

“Makareio won’t host football anymore,” Ioannou clarified. “But the training fields will remain. The area is set to become a proper sports city.”

What happens to the teams?

With Makareio out of the picture, local teams who’ve called it home are now looking for new grounds. Ioannou reassured fans that KOA is working closely with clubs to ensure smooth transitions, with no extra financial burden.

- Olympiakos Nicosia will move to GSP Stadium for the new season.
- Digenis Morphou is expected to play at Doxa’s ground, following talks with KOA and club officials.
- Ethnikos Assia or Iraklis Gerolakkou will play at PAEEK’s stadium, with the other likely headed to THOI’s pitch.

A meeting with all teams currently using Makareio is scheduled for next Wednesday, where KOA will iron out the details.

“The clubs won’t pay more than they do now. We’re making sure they’ll have proper training and match venues,” said Ioannou.

What’s the price tag?

KOA didn’t reveal full details yet, but Ioannou confirmed the redevelopment costs will be covered in the organization’s budget. More detailed plans will be announced soon.

As for previous interest from APOEL and Omonia to use Makareio, that’s now off the table.

“Makareio won’t be a football stadium going forward,” Ioannou said. “Both clubs are already working on building their own stadiums.”
