The FIBA EuroBasket 2025 has given Limassol’s economy a major shot in the arm, with hotels, restaurants, and shops reporting a surge in business as thousands of fans, teams, and journalists poured into the city.

According to Kathimerini's Dorita Yiannakou, the weeklong tournament, held from August 28 to September 4 at the renovated Spyros Kyprianou Sports Center, brought more than just high-flying basketball. Local hoteliers recorded over 4,500 additional overnight stays, according to Christos G. Tsanos, president of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association (PASYXE). Fans and support staff began arriving days before the opening tip-off, boosting occupancy and spending throughout the city.

With national teams from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina competing, Limassol’s restaurants, shops, and small businesses saw a steady stream of visitors renting cars, dining out, and shopping, said Andreas Tsouloftas, president of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The event has translated directly into revenue for local businesses and the state,” he said.

The tournament also showcased Limassol as a venue for international sporting events. The €14.5 million renovation of the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Center paid off, officials said, creating a facility capable of hosting top-tier competitions and attracting tourists even during Cyprus’ quieter travel seasons.

Beyond immediate economic gains, the event offered Cyprus a global spotlight. Fans shared their experiences on social media, helping promote Limassol as a future destination for sports tourism, while local authorities hope to use the momentum to secure similar events in the years ahead.

“The impact goes beyond hotels and restaurants,” Tsouloftas added. “It’s about showing Limassol can host international events and drawing visitors to explore our city and our country.”
