Greek retailer Kotsovolos fined €2 million for misleading discounts

The Minister of Development imposes hefty penalty following audit, reinforcing commitment to consumer protection and market integrity

Kathimerini Greece Newsroom

The Minister of Development, Kostas Skrekas, has levied a 2 million euro fine on the company "Dixons South - East Europe Commercial and Industrial Company of Electrical, Information Technology, Telecommunications and Insurance Intermediaries," operating under the brand name "Kotsovolos." The fine follows an audit by the Interdepartmental Market Control Unit (DIMEA), revealing a violation of the law pertaining to misleading discounts.

The audit found that the company's online store failed to include the selling price before and after the application of a price reduction for specific products sold under a discount announcement. The imposed fine is related to a breach of Article 15, paragraph 2a of Law no. 4177/2013, addressing misleading discounts.

Minister Skrekas emphasized, "We said and we are doing it. The controls of the Ministry of Development and the imposition of fines will continue with the sole criterion of the implementation of the law. The market is no one's property; it has laws and rules of operation for everyone. We control the market; we protect the consumer. We will not allow promiscuity. Violators will be punished."
