After 40, it's worth paying a little more attention to what we eat. Not because we suddenly need to follow a strict diet or lose weight, but because our nutritional needs gradually change as we age.
Maintaining muscle mass, supporting digestive health, protecting the heart and bones, and managing body weight are just some of the reasons to focus more on the quality of our diet.
Small changes can make a real difference
1. Add more protein to your meals: Protein is important at every age, but getting enough becomes particularly important as we get older. However, avoid consuming excessive amounts of protein at the expense of carbohydrates.
Tip: Add eggs and/or cottage cheese to your breakfast, enjoy yogurt as a snack, and include lean meat or fish in your main meals.
2. Make fiber part of your daily routine: Vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains are all excellent sources of dietary fiber. Aim for variety, as different types of fiber offer different benefits for digestive health.
Tip: If vegetables and legumes are not regular features of your meals, there's no need to change everything overnight. Start by adding an extra serving of vegetables to lunch and dinner. Whenever possible, swap refined products for whole-grain alternatives.
3. Don't be afraid of healthy fats: Fat is not the enemy when it comes to eating well. It helps the body absorb essential nutrients and supports heart and brain health. Olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish are all worth including in your diet. The key is to pay attention to portion sizes.
Tip: Add olive oil towards the end of cooking to help preserve its nutritional value. You can also add avocado to salads for extra flavor and nutrition.
4. Cut back on ultra-processed foods: Ultra-processed foods are everywhere, making it easy to eat more of them than we should. Soft drinks, sweets, salty snacks, breakfast cereals, ready-made meals and processed meats are just some examples.
Tip: You don't need to give up your favorite sweet treat or snack completely. We all enjoy these foods from time to time. Instead, focus on your overall eating habits and what you consume throughout the day. Leave room for these treats when you genuinely feel like enjoying them.
Eating well after 40 doesn't have to be complicated. There's no magic food, and there's no need to eliminate entire food groups without a good reason. What matters most is consistency.
