Weekend warriors: Chocolate in the mountains, wine by the sea; your weekend is sorted

Platres gets sweet, Comic Con takes over Nicosia and Limassol’s Wine Festival pours its final weekend. Here’s where to go Oct. 2–4.

Newsroom

If your weekend plans currently involve asking “What shall we do?” until Sunday evening, here’s a head start.

October’s first weekend offers a good excuse to head to the mountains, spend an evening near the sea, or stay in Nicosia and discover something beyond your usual coffee stop. And there are options that won’t require buying a ticket, too.

Platres, with chocolate on top

A trip to Platres is already a fairly easy sell. Add a chocolate festival, and even the family member who objects to every outing may be persuaded.

The village’s second Chocolate Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, with local confectioners offering chocolate treats, handmade sweets, fountains, and hot drinks. Children can join chocolate workshops, while the program also includes music, traditional dancing, painting, mosaics, and morning nature walks.

Go for the mountain outing. Stay for the chocolate. Nobody needs to know which one was the real reason.

Where and when: Platres Central Square, Oct. 3–4, 10 a.m.–7 p.m. both days. Entry is free.

Nicosia puts on its cape

Don’t be surprised if the person next to you in Nicosia this weekend looks ready to save the universe. Cyprus Comic Con returns to the State Fair grounds, bringing comics, gaming, cosplay and pop culture together for three days.

Friday’s outdoor opening night runs from 5 p.m. to midnight, with €5 admission. On Saturday and Sunday, the indoor event runs 10 a.m.–9 p.m., with tickets at €15 for one day or €20 for the weekend, including Friday night.

For anyone curious but reluctant to commit, the outdoor areas are free on Saturday and Sunday. Some guest activities cost extra, so check before promising an autograph to an enthusiastic teenager.

Where and when: Cyprus State Fair, Nicosia, Oct. 2–4. Tickets and details.

One last toast in Limassol

If you’ve been meaning to visit Limassol’s Wine Festival, this is your gentle reminder: it finishes Sunday.

The festival’s 65th edition continues at the Municipal Gardens through Oct. 4. Pair it with a walk along Molos or a stop at the Old Port, and you have a coastal outing that can comfortably stretch into the evening.

Check the daily program, opening hours, and admission arrangements before heading over. And if tasting is part of the plan, sort out the ride home first. That particular decision gets no better after the second glass.

Where: Limassol Municipal Gardens. Final day: Sunday, Oct. 4.

A different side of the capital

For something beyond food and festivals, Buffer Fringe brings performing arts to Nicosia from Friday through Sunday.

Organized by the Home for Cooperation, the festival brings artists and audiences from different communities together, with performances intended to get people talking and looking at familiar things differently.

You don’t need to make a whole day of it. Pick something that interests you, check the venue, and let it take you somewhere outside your usual weekend routine.

When: Oct. 2–4. Find individual venues and performance details in the official program.

The sofa will still be there on Monday. The chocolate festival won’t.
