There are two kinds of people in Cyprus this weekend. Those who think swimming 10 kilometers in the sea sounds like a good Sunday morning, and those who would rather stand on dry land and cheer. If you’re in the second camp, there’s also zivania in Pelendri, a jungle with a roof in Nicosia and a ping-pong tournament where your questionable backhand can finally do some good.
Pelendri pours the zivania
Pelendri is throwing a two-day party for Cyprus’ famously strong grape spirit. Watch it being distilled, see how grapes were traditionally stomped and browse the village market between bouts of music and dancing. Try a little zivania with smoked lountza or Cypriot sausage, and give the designated driver first dibs on the food. Saturday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m., in Pelendri.
The jungle comes to Nicosia
The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra brings The Jungle Book to the Pallas Theatre, with Petros Georkadjis telling the story and Kyriaki Kountouri conducting Miklós Rózsa’s score from the 1942 film. Both performances are in the afternoon, so there’s time for an early dinner in the old town afterward. Saturday at 4 and 5:30 p.m., Pallas Theatre, Paphos Gate. Tickets and details.
A quiet detour to Kiti
A girl dancing under a rainbow gives Dream, a free exhibition by painter Eleftheria Georgiadou, its name. Children’s faces feature throughout the collection. Make it a slow morning with a coffee in the village afterward. Saturday and Sunday, Kiti Municipal District Offices. Saturday’s listing starts at 10 a.m.
Ping-pong for a good cause in Larnaca
If you’ve been waiting for a chance to show off the forehand you perfected at family gatherings, here it is. This charity tournament supports the Alkinoos Artemios Foundation, which helps children with cancer and blood disorders. Paddles and balls are provided. Saturday, 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m., 67 Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue. Entry €10.
Let the kids make a mess in Limassol
Limassol AGORA has an autumn messy-play session on Saturday morning. It’s an indoor option for little ones who’ve been up since dawn and parents who’d prefer to keep their own kitchen out of it. Saturday, 10–11:30 a.m., Limassol AGORA.
Limassol’s Cine Volos neighborhood tells its stories
The Neighborhood of Cine Volos festival brings oral histories, storytelling and activities you can join in to Philellinon Street. If you’re looking for a Sunday outing you can pair with lunch in town, start here. Through Sunday, Nov. 8, on Philellinon Street. Festival details.
Paphos stays up late
NOX gets going at Cliff Social at 5 p.m. Saturday. Around midnight, the techno crowd moves to Studio 54 Retro Club for the official after-party, with Thai DJ Nakadia on the lineup. Sunday breakfast can wait. Saturday from 5 p.m. at Cliff Social, with the after-party at Studio 54 Retro Club around midnight. After-party tickets.
Ayia Napa takes the plunge
Ayia Napa Marina is the hub for OCEANMAN, an open-water swimming event with sprint, children’s and relay races on Saturday. The 5K and 10K swims are scheduled for Sunday. If you’re watching from shore, you can bring a coffee and still tell people you spent the morning at a sporting event. Saturday and Sunday, Ayia Napa Marina.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms are in the forecast, so check for updates before setting out for the outdoor events. If the rain wins, the jungle has a roof.
