Drivers across Cyprus were met with heavy police presence overnight as authorities carried out islandwide patrols aimed at tackling crime, dangerous driving, and boosting public safety.
And judging by the numbers, many motorists may have wished they stayed home a little earlier.
Police said officers stopped 458 vehicles and checked 562 people during coordinated operations carried out in key urban areas across the island.
The biggest problem once again? Speeding.
Out of 281 traffic complaints issued during the operation, 128 involved drivers exceeding the speed limit, a reminder of a habit many Cypriots complain about daily on the roads, especially at night.
Police also carried out alcohol and drug checks on drivers. Of 79 alcohol tests conducted, three drivers were reported for drink driving, while three drivers returned positive preliminary drug test results during four narcotests.
Authorities also investigated 11 traffic-related offenses and seized seven vehicles as part of the overnight operation.
Beyond traffic enforcement, police also inspected 40 premises in an effort to crack down on delinquency and other offenses, leading to six complaints.
The increased police activity comes as authorities continue trying to address public concerns over road safety, reckless driving, and crime, particularly during late-night hours.
For many people in Cyprus, police checkpoints and patrols have become an increasingly common sight, especially heading into weekends, as officials push for stronger enforcement both on the roads and in city centers.
Police said similar operations will continue daily with enhanced patrols, targeted checks, and rapid intervention units aimed at preventing crime and improving what authorities described as “the public’s sense of security.”
