A 26-year-old Greek Cypriot man is in custody after a fatal collision in Limassol early Sunday morning, which claimed the life of a 20-year-old cyclist of Syrian descent. Authorities say the driver was both intoxicated and under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
According to preliminary reports, the young driver ran a red light while traveling at extremely high speed. A police officer who witnessed the incident from a nearby intersection reported seeing the vehicle breach the traffic signal. Officials are reviewing camera footage from the area to confirm the sequence of events.
Traffic enforcement data indicates that the car was traveling at 136 km/h in a zone with a 50 km/h speed limit. Drug testing returned positive, and an alcohol test revealed a blood-alcohol reading more than twice the legal limit. The driver has been detained for six days while the investigation continues.
The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on 28th October Avenue. The cyclist was struck by the vehicle, and the car subsequently collided with a second vehicle driven by a 48-year-old woman before coming to a stop on a median. The cyclist was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither the driver nor the second motorist sustained injuries.
An autopsy confirmed that the young cyclist died from severe head trauma and multiple injuries to vital organs, consistent with the force of the collision. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
